A Break In The Case

Here's the finished Private Investigator illustration. After looking at some of Lou Romano's work, I was inspired to take a more traditional-looking approach, using some dry brush painting. I forwent using a more muted palette from classic noir-style films as it just didn't seem to fit the way I had handled the character; instead I opted for a more saturated look. Overall I'm pretty pleased with it - hope everyone out there enjoys it too!

Private Eye Design

I wanted to work out the design for the Private Eye in my forthcoming illustration before I dug into it, so here he is. I was looking to do something that was sleek and relatively simple, without too much extraneous information. He'd have an even simpler silhouette if I had stuck with just a suit like I had originally planned, but come on, he's a noir-styled P.I.! He needs a trench coat. :)

Mermaid Sketch

Just a little something I drew for fun not too long ago. I may do a color version, though I'm working on a private-eye inspired illustration that will probably take precedence over any further work on this.

Soapbox Derby Storyboards

A few days ago I wrote a brief story treatment based on this image, then followed it up by fully storyboarding out the treatment. I thought it would be fun to tell the story behind this scene, as well as do some relatively refined boards. The end results are the following pages:Soapbox Derby Storyboards Page 1Click "Continue reading" to see the remaining three pages. Nick Mag Page Layout

I actually did this a month or so ago, but very recently went back to implement some changes after getting some solid feedback from friends I had showed it to. This is just an example to show page layout skills; it was pretty enjoyable to work on this, so I may end up doing more layouts for different types of magazines.

Aviator Postcard

At last, the aviator postcard piece I'd been working on is finished! You can find it either by clicking on the thumbnail to the right (obvious!) or it's more permanent home on the Illustration page (slightly less obvious!). It would have been done sooner but I was having some trouble with the gradients when moving the file from Illustrator to Photoshop to finish it up with the texture work. Now I know how to avoid that particular problem though, so it's all gravy. There will probably be more posts soon, since I've gotten some more work done lately, so keep your eyes trained to this space whenever you can afford to!

Aviator Design

Lately I've been wanting to focus on the type of work I really enjoy; I've been experimenting with lots of different approaches, but I tend to find myself pining for the styles and subjects I'm most interested in. With that in mind, I've begun working on a postcard to send to prospective freelance clients. It will be a subject I enjoy (early aviation), related to my website (travel), and indicative of the type of work I'm best at (bright, cutesy vector art). So I present to you the first step: the main character design! Just click on the thumbnail for the full image - it's in the Sketchbook section as well, for future reference.

Live at last!

It's taken the better part of three months (on and off), but I've finally installed Wordpress and ginned up a suitable theme. It's a logical extension of the old design, taking what worked before and adding some new functionality. Moving from a completely custom HTML engine for the site to a Wordpress engine should allow me a lot more versatility with how I display my work - just take a look at the galleries listed at top, with their slick transitions and significantly larger images! It also makes it far easier to update the site, so new work should be added more frequently now. I've also finally got a dedicated Design section, though there's nothing in it just yet. It will be updated soon with some of the typography and layout I've done, but my primary concern was getting the site moved from its testing page to the main page and having the Illustration and Sketchbook sections ready to go. So take a look around, and shoot me an email if you have any comments!
